MESSAGES THAT THE NATIONAL WAR MEMORIAL CONVEYS

A War Memorial is a building or a monument, built particularly to celebrate a victory in a war, or remind us of the selfless service of our soldiers, who were and are ready to sacrifice their lives while performing their duty day and night for Independent India. It inspires citizens to respect the military and its service to the nation. 

On this note, the National War Memorial was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25th February 2019. It is an engrossing place stretched across 40 acres near the India Gate, located in the heart of India’s capital city—New Delhi. 

The War Memorial in India has much significance. It helps create that attachment in the people’s hearts towards the martyrdom of the soldiers. It, at times, aspires the young generation to be a soldier themselves, as it ignites the sense of moral belonging in us. A War Memorial proves that the life of a soldier is immortal, since he/she will always live in the memories of the people of our country.

Armed conflicts against Pakistan and China; 1916 war in Goa; Operation Pawan; Operation Rakshak; and many others—the memorial walls honour all the 25,942 soldiers who died sacrificing their lives during these disputes in golden letters. The Memorial consists of four concentric circles and a central obelisk. Each of the concentric circles is designed as Chakravyuh. It includes the Amar Chakra (Circle of Immortality), Veerta Chakra (Circle of Bravery), Tyag Chakra (Circle of Sacrifice), Rakshak Chakra (Circle of Protection).  

“Our flag does not fly because the wind moves it. It flies with the last breath of each soldier who died protecting it.”
